The Churchill is a 14-story 124-unit Highrise on the Wilshire Corridor in Westwood. Built-in 1961 by Dworman Associates, a New York Developer, originally as apartments at a cost of $5M.

The Architect for this project was modern architect William Lescaze who also designed CBS Columbia Square in Hollywood. William was a Functionalist, he believed a house should be built from the inside out, not from the outside in, and the focus should be the experience of living there. Lescaze loved windows. His home in New York was nicknamed the glasshouse. I think that is one reason there are such massive 28-foot living room windows in the Churchill. The Churchill also has very large balconies- this was an attempt by the New Yorker to take advantage of LA’s great weather which allows indoor-outdoor living. Large Balconies are hard to find on the Wilshire Corridor. The Churchill was converted to Condos by Dworman in 1977.

It is a tad bit odd that The Churchill has an International Modern style to it because the building was named after, you guessed it, Winston Churchill, and you’d expect it to be a traditional building. You can see the building paying homage to Churchill with the Old English Script of the building’s Logo. The original Marketing material also included a Churchill quote “We shape our dwellings, and afterward, our dwellings shape us”

The HOA redid the Pool area a few years back, so the pool is amazing. Also for more reasonably priced condos on the corridor, The Churchill has in-unit laundry which you don’t find often in the conversion buildings.

All of the floor plans in the Churchill are single story. The units are numbered with Letters. There are 10 condos on each floor. Floorplans E, F,G, and J face Wilshire. Floorplans J, H, D-1 and D-2 C and A face the courtyard and pool area. The top floor condos have the same floorplans as lower levels. One unique thing about The Churchill is the large balconies that every unit has. The balconies are 25 feet long and 5 feet wide. Many owners have enclosed the balconies to make the already huge living room, even larger. I noticed that the nearby Comstock has a lot of owners who also enclosed their balconies. Floorplans are 1 Br, 2Br, and 3Br so there is quite a mix. In addition to 118 regular condos, there are 6 maids units.

The 3 bedroom condos have 28 foot long sliding glass doors in living rooms! Look at all the glass. The Dining room has a chandelier, and the original floorplans had a wet bar in the living room. No fireplaces. Master bedrooms have their own master bathroom. The Bedrooms are large, and the bathrooms are on the smaller side. Most floorplans have side by side bedrooms. Most masters have a reach-in closet, but some floor plans have a walk-in. Electric stove in the kitchen.

Parking at the Churchill is assigned not deeded. There are over 200 parking spots in a 4 level subterranean garage, so there is enough parking for 2 spaces for each condo. You must Valet, you cannot self-park. The Valet can accommodate up to 15 guest parking spaces for special events. 

Laundry is in the unit, either a stacked unit in a closet in the hallway or side by side in the kitchen. There is also a somewhat superfluous community laundry room in the parking garage.
