La Brea Tar Pits

The tar pits are a naturally occurring phenomena caused by oil evaporation on the pool’s surface that creates tar (in the 1920’s the area was a productive oil field). The tar has trapped prehistoric animals, plants and other specimens, that have been frozen in time. Visitors to the Page Musuem can see fossils discovered in the tar pits and watch archeologists excavate the site live! Over 100 tons of fossils, bones, and artifacts have been recovered from the tar pits. Each fossil must be painstakingly cleaned with magnifying glass and qtip sized probes to scrape the tar and clean the fossils.

The grounds and museum are very kid friendly. The majority of the Museum is focused on Dinosaurs. The Museum is set on a gently sloping hill, so children can have fun rolling down the hill and playing on the expansive park like grounds.
