The course was developed in 1919, under a land lease from owner G. Allan Hancock to a group of local business men. Normal McBeth, an accomplished Californian golfer of the day, was hired to design the course. Norman was allowed free reign to do whatever he wanted. He took careful consideration of space, and prevailing west wind when designing the course. Kyle Phillips updated the course. Kyle added additional bunkers, and made the bunkers deeper. Later on, Beverly Boulevard would come to intersect the Hancock Park golf course, dividing it in two, separating between the front and back nine- as it is present day.
